Yesterday morning on the way to work I had to stop and get gas... per usual I wait until the empty light has been on for a while. Drives my poor husband crazy.
While getting gas I went in to grab a bottle of water. While waiting to pay a man smiled at me. I smiled back, after all my Mama taught me manners. He then wished me a good morning and followed up with a "What's a pretty thing like you doing buying your own things" Um. Huh? So, a little laugh and then I said "Oh my husband doesn't mind me spending some of the money I earn". There was a sweet sarcastic tone to this. Sadly, these typed words don't convey it. If you know any Southern women then you can probably imagine how it sounded. Or if you know my Mom. lol
He didn't say anything else to me then.
Finally my turn to pay and then start towards the door. The flirter quickly opened the door for me, and again manners dictated my actions. I thanked him with a smile. Well... I guess he thought that meant I was opening my own personal door. He asked me if I had time for a cup of coffee before I left, "his treat". I declined, mentioned that my husband and I already had our morning coffee and thanked him anyway.
On the way to my car I was actually feeling a bit pleased that someone that was about 10 years younger than I, and not bad looking, was flirting with me. So what if he was short? It's not like I'm tall. However, my husband is and I've grown rather fond of a tall man. :) Who cares that he was a bit backwards Southern? You know... not only an accent that is heavier than rum soaked cake but seemingly the same intelligence level of someone who drank said bottle of rum. Still... he was flirting with me. I was considering it a compliment.
As I was driving away I saw him leaving as well. On his pretty bright yellow moped. Sigh... a short, backwards Southern man on a bright yellow moped. Be still my heart. (insert sarcastic tone on last sentence)
If nothing else, I got a laugh out of it and a story to share with John. So... a flirt is a compliment. No matter where it comes from.
Right?

I am Woman... hear me squeal
My day so far:
This morning around 4:30 I finished my shower and with just a towel wrapped around me I sat down to play with my new laptop perched on the arm of the couch. As I reached for it I glimpsed something from the corner of my eye.
A spider.
Not just any spider, a big spider. A big spider on my new laptop. So of course I scream. My dear husband, fast asleep, didn't come running out of bed (and a sound sleep) to rescue me.
I was on my own.
Just me and the beast.
I slowly backed away from the couch trying to see what I could use in the upcoming battle. It was important that I not take my eyes off the monster in the horrifying event that I may lose sight of him and he disappear only to resurface when my guard was down. That left only one weapon in my reach. My towel.
So, with a shiver of fear (and cold a/c) bathing me in goose bumps, I stood totally nude with a towel in my hands ready to do battle.
I whipped the towel around like a true matador ready for the fierce upcoming battle, took a deep breath to steady my nerves, and lunged. I trapped the huge spider in the folds of the towel.
Then the realization hit me that there was a giant trapped in the towel I was holding. My bravery vanished and I dropped the towel. As it hit the ground I could see the horrific monster lurking in the folds of the towel right in the middle. Looking around I realized that no one was going to come to my rescue. I also realized that my feet were on the same ground that the spider was on. So I did what any self respecting woman would do.
I put shoes on.
Of course I couldn't leave the room and give the spider his chance to regroup and plot his retribution so I had to grab the shoes I had kicked off the night before. Heels.
I then channeled my inner Wonder Woman, grabbed the towel trapping the horrific giant monstrous creature inside and rushed to the nearest door. I flipped light switches on during my brave dash to pull the blinds back, opened the sliding glass door and flung the towel out as far as I could.
I made it. I defeated the beast. My sanity returned. Along with the realization that I was standing in a brightly lit room looking out in to the dark wearing nothing but heels...
and my courage.

One of My Favorite Things - repeated because it's so popular!
I was just looking over the entries for the unbirthday gift giveaways and noticed just how many people want +Nikki Massie's book on how to make the perfect protein shake every time.
So, I just had to add one more blog to give all one more chance to win it.
Easy,easy... just comment below and you will be added to the third list to win her book.
This means that if you commented on the other two (and it's not too late to do so) then you will have three chances to win it.
Yay! Good luck!!

A Few of My Favorite Things - Part #...oh, who cares. lol It's Vitamins!!!
Yep. Vitamins. Most of y'all had to know that I would have vitamins on here, right? My favorite things would have to include them.
Vitamins are important for everyone, but a necessity for those that have Gastric Bypass surgery. It's not a choice, it's not something you take for "a little bit extra". The right vitamins can be the difference in your physical and metal health.
For that reason, this post is directed primarily to those other surgically altered freaks that may be reading this.
Some of my pet peeves:
Post-ops taking vitamins made for children.
You can not take Flintstones and expect it to be okay. Flintstones?? Really? You are an adult. Why would you take a children's vitamin to begin with?
And those early out who might not be taking vitamins or might be taking childrens vitamins swearing it's okay because they just had their first labs and "everything is great". Um. No. Sometimes it takes a bit to show up when there is a deficiency. Do you really want to wait until you've done damage and then try to play catch up?
Let's not even go into Calcium. Wait, it's my blog. Yes, let's get into calcium. You don't take calcium or you take the wrong kind (carbonate) but oh, it's okay because your labs show up great. Guess what? Of course they will. When you are not depositing calcium into your body's "bank" you are withdrawing the calcium from your bones and your teeth. Blood work isn't going to show that. By the time it does I would imagine you'd be in some pretty deep trouble there.
The way you can see a deficiency? A bone density scan. Ask for it. Most insurance companies will cover it with a large weight loss. I had one. Guess what? Osteopenia. That's my diagnosis. So, I'm doubling my calcium and adding extra D3. Really hoping to turn this around before it gets worse.
Unsure what you should be doing for your vitamins? Best place you can get advice online would be through ASMBS. American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. http://asmbs.org/2012/06/asmbs-integrated-health-nutritional-guidelines-for-the-surgical-weight-loss-patient/ Look at Table 5 for your vitamin supplement guidelines. While there though, scroll through and read more. It's amazing what you can learn there. Download it, share it. Share it with your Nut and surgeon. Especially if they are one of those that tell you to take Flintstones. Share it with other post-ops. Share it with pre-ops. Just spread the word. Vitamins. Vitamins. Vitamins. For LIFE. FOR life.
Okay, I kept the lecture very short. For me anyway. So, today for my final unbirthday gift giveaway you that know me through the wls world should know that it'd have to be about vitamins. It's such an important topic to me that I even do a vitamin reminder (hello you beautiful otters) twice a day and have since May to a rather large special group of people. Twice a day, seven days a week. Rarely have I missed a reminder - even when camping. Which is where all the "others" became "otters". Because it is important.
To be entered for a chance to win a 30-day Advantage Pack from Building Blocks Vitamins all you have to do is comment below. An Advantage Pack consists of Iron, Calcium, Multi-vitamin, and Anti-ox. I love their Anti-Ox. Cherry chewables and they taste good to me. For me, it really is all about taste. :-) If you are the winner I will get with you on choosing from their products. You can see what they offer by going to their website. Building Blocks
Now, want even EXTRA chances? I have ways you can gain extra entries:
1. Go to the website above for ASMBS. Comment below something you learned. Anything. Just share that knowledge. Because I truly believe knowledge is power.
2. Go to Building Blocks website linked above and go to their online Bariatric Education section. It can be found under the Health and Nutrition tab. Again, come back and post something you learned there.
3. Share this with others. Each person that comments and said that you sent them will get you an extra entry. No limit.
I hope you have all had fun playing along with me this week. It's been a blast for me and I wish I could have done it for the whole month. I still have so many favorite things! :-)
Don't forget, you can enter all of the different contests on this blog throughout the night. Actually, to give it a bit extra time - the deadlines for all entries will be High noon on my birthday. Tomorrow, Sunday. And that is EST time. ;-)
Good luck everyone and happy unbirthday!!

A Few of My Favorite Things - Part 7 - Let's get Click'n!
Today is the last day for the unbirthday giveaways. There will be more than one listed today. Because we haven't hit on two of my very favorite things yet!
If this is your first time here and don't know what's going on, just read the previous posts. It'll also give you a chance to enter into the other unbirthday gifts drawings.
The drawings for all of my favorite things will be done tomorrow.
How many of you with surgically altered guts went through massive amounts of protein powder just trying to find one you could tolerate? I sure did. I'd hear so many people say that "so and so" is really great and I'd rush out to get it, hoping that it would be great. Usually ending in a bit of a disappointment for me.
I was so worried after my surgery because I knew how important protein was, yet I could not find one I liked. I have a severe texture issue and if I gag on it once, chances are I'll never try it again.
I just realized - if I could have all the money I spent on trying different powders I could buy my airline ticket to the WLSFA event in Vegas and still have money leftover to gamble. :-)
I gave up trying two years ago. That's because I finally found what works for me. Click Vanilla Latte. I totally heart Click. Every day I have mine exactly the same way I have for over two years now. In a previous post I wrote exactly how I make mine. I drink it hot every day and find it soothing. An added bonus that you wls peeps will get? It has the same effect on me that coffee does to my husband. I poop. In the wls community "I pooped" can be the best words heard. lol
So now that I have told you about texture aversions, gagging aversions and pooping let me get on to the good thing - actually, the great thing - one of my very favorite things! And now you can have a chance of also enjoying one of my very favorite things...
Yep!! Let's get Click'n!! Comment below for a chance to win your choice of a canister of Click - Mocha, Vanilla Latte or Decaf as well as a Click Tumbler! :)
If you have a surgically altered gut or not and are looking for a great protein powder I couldn't recommend one more than Click Espresso Protein Drink! Go visit their website and look at the recipes they have and pick up a couple of sample packs if you've never given it a try.
Want to enter more than once?
For an extra entry, share this contest and each time someone comments that you sent them your name will be entered an extra time in the drawing tomorrow.
Good luck and happy unbirthday!!

A Few of My Favorite Things - Part 6 - cookbooks!
The time is getting close to my birthday week and the unbirthday gifts to be coming to an end. If you are new and don't know what's going on let me bring you up to speed.
My birthday is this week and I am already so blessed with so very much in my life - a wonderful husband, awesome kids, a terrific granddaughter and some pretty great friends. So I've decided to give back for my birthday.
Every day I'll post at least one gift giveaway opportunity. Some days will be more than one. These will be based on some of my favorite things. Not quite like Oprah though. She has a champagne budget, I have a tap water budget. Maybe a Sams's Choice water budget. :)
Not everything will appeal to you, however any that do you just need to comment on the post. You can enter all of them if you like, but only one entry per giveaway, only one prize per winner.
This leads to today's gift giveaway. I love cookbooks. Totally love them. I'm also trying to cook healthier. To this end I've been buying cookbooks to help me with that. I want to share one of them with one of you.
So, today if you are interested you can just comment below for a chance to win the twin of the cookbook I just got.
Stay tuned for more...
Good luck and happy unbirthday!

A Few of My Favorite Things - Part 5 (for real) BBGC
Continuing on with the theme of my favorite things for my birthday week - I'm doing a bonus give away today. :-)
Most of you know I had Bariatric Surgery 7/13/10. Shortly after that I had some complications that meant going through a couple of ER visits, a couple of hospitals stays, a picc line, home health care nurse for a zofran pump. Just fun, fun, fun.
Got past all of that - Yay! However, if I had had the knowledge that I have now I really believe that my problems would have been at least half of what they were. That's because I didn't have a good support group where I could ask questions, learn, share. Actually, I didn't have a support group at all.
My surgery was done almost 2 hours away and that was too far to drive for a night meeting. I went to one local one and it was so lame it took all I had to not walk out in the middle. Huge waste of time.
What to do? Well through one site I learned about this snarky woman, Beth, who went by the name of Melting Mama. From there I went to her blog, from her blog I went to BBGC. Bariatric Bad Girls Club.
There I found support. Tag line for BBGC? Advocacy/Support.
BBGC is NOT about being bad in the traditional "bad" sense. It's about supporting, sharing, caring with a bit of snark at times. Rudeness is not allowed. I watched in awe as we hit 1,000 members then I watched us go over 2,000. I have met some really great women there. Some come in and stay, some go. Nothing is a one size fits all yet I think even those that left would say that they learned and/or received support while there.
So, today to represent one of my favorite things - support - I am giving some bling. BBGC style.
Please pardon the picture, it's not very good. This is the black I heart BBGC bling bracelet. If you don't want to wait to see if you win this, then you can buy it on MM's web site!
To win this gift all you have to do is comment below. If you are commenting as anonymous please be sure to tell me who you are in case you win.
Recap: To celebrate my birthday I am gifting others (my life is filled with gifts daily). You can enter any, or all, of the contests posted. Only one entry per contest though unless stated otherwise.
Drawings for all gifts will be done on Sunday.
Good luck and happy unbirthday! :-)

A Few of My Favorite Things - Part 5 - Nikki & Torani
In case you have missed the previous posts I am giving away presents for my birthday! I'm doing a few of my favorite things all week. Drawings will be held on my birthday, Sunday.
Protein shakes and SF syrups... they kind of seem to go together, don't they? At least for those that like to experiment with their shakes. Me? I'm a boring purist. I have been drinking the same protein shake made the same way for two years. Here's my recipe: 1 scoop Click Vanilla Latte, 1 scoop AnyWhey Unflavored protein powder. Add to 12 ounces of water in shaker bottle. Shake. Shake. Shake. Do a little dance while shaking to get the blood flowing. :-)
Pour into coffee mug, nuke one minute. Add one splenda and a splash of SF French Vanilla creamer. I then use a hand held little mixer to make sure there are not any lumps at all. Nuke again for about 30 seconds. Sit down with the remote in one hand and enjoy. Yummm.
Some of you though like to play and experiment. So today's giveaway can make it a bit easier for you!
One of you will win +Nikki Massie's protein shake book http://www.amazon.com/Bariatric-Foodie-Perfect-Protein-Shakes/dp/1480101095/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1359064392&sr=8-4&keywords=perfect+protein+drinks ANDDDDD 2 bottles of Torani Sugar Free syrup to play with. Yep, you will get Nik's 5 star rated protein recipe book as well as a bottle of SF chocolate syrup and a bottle of SF Irish Cream.
So, what herculean feat do you need to do in order to win this awesome unbirthday gift? Easy peasy. Just comment below. If you are commenting as anonymous though please be sure to tell me who you are. Even if it's first name and last initial. I have to have some way of finding you if you are a winner.
To recap... all this week I am giving away things for my birthday. You can enter any, or all, of the the contests. However, you can enter only once per contest. EXCEPT for this one... this contest you can have more than one entry.
How you ask? Well, if you comment you get one entry. If you send someone here and they say that you are the one that sent them then you will get an extra entry for each person that says you sent them.
Oh and here's a little tease... there will be another give away listed today that those who belong to BBGC might find very interesting! Stay tuned. xoxoxxoxo

Oh and here's a little tease... there will be another give away listed today that those who belong to BBGC might find very interesting! Stay tuned. xoxoxxoxo

In case it's needed here's a reminder on how this works:
Every day this week I will add one, or more, prizes to this blog to give away on my birthday. You can enter all of them up until midnight, January 26th. However, you can only enter one time per prize.
If you enter anonymously please be sure to sign with at least your first name, and maybe last initial, or indicate some way to make sure I know that it is you.
That's all. It's just that easy.
You know, doing this giveaway has taken my mind off my upcoming birthday. It's only until I see Leelee P. posting about hers that I realize how close it is. We share a birthday - many years apart - but share the same date.
Since I will then actually be IN my 50's aren't I supposed to start feeling old? Cause I don't. I don't know if it's the vitamins, the eating right (most of the time) or just being totally, dorkally in love with my husband.
I will be 51 on Sunday. I will have one of my sisters tell me happy 29th birthday - she always does. My response has always been to stop cheating me out of my years. I'm not 29, nor have I been for awhile. 29 really wasn't all that great of a year for me anyway. I'm going to be in my 50's. I plan on enjoying this trip up the mountain.
The coffee will help. ;-)

A Few of My Favorite Things - Part 2 - Nioxin Hair Products
Continuing on with my birthday week giveaways with my own version of some of my favorite things.
Today is Nioxin. I love their stuff. My hair is thin and fine, but not near as bad as it was before I started using this product.
Since it's made a difference for me I want to share with one of you. :-)
Speaking of hair - about 4 months after my surgery I started losing what hair I did have. A lot of hair. A result of having surgery and not getting enough protein and vitamins in. It's grown back but not as much as I would have.
However, one thing I have noticed about my hair is that it seems the less that grows on my head the more hair grows other places! Places I don't necessarily want it to grow! Is that a sign of old age???
Cue Roseanne Roseannadanna "Well, Jane, it just goes to show you, it's always something! If it's not one thing, it's another!"
How many of you are old enough to know Roseanne Roseannadanna? :-)
If you would like to be entered in for the drawing on Sunday, January 27th to win this:
then just comment below with one beauty tip you have. All who comment will be entered in the random drawing.
